Science Communication & Outreach

Wellenbrecher Project

The project „Wellenbrecher“ (Engl. “Breakwater”) gives a voice to people who are active in the UN Ocean Decade within German-speaking countries.

In January 2025, we launched a podcast that interviews guests and how their work or industry contributes to a sustainable transformation, to the decade challenges, and ask for specific examples of how other individuals can get involved to contribute towards the UN Ocean Decade. Additionally, online community meet-ups “Kaffeejause” are organized, which allows listeners to ask questions to recent podcast guests (details via ECOP DACH LinkedIn or Instagram). Our vision is that the podcasts serve as a basis for conversation and future events such as panel discussions or live events.

You can listen to Wellenbrecher our  Website or wherever you listen to podcasts (e.g., Spotify, Apple Podcast).

Let's create deep conversations to raise awareness for the UN Ocean Decade!

Teaching

Middle and High School Level

I have taught 90-minute lessons for an 8th and 12th grade classes in the scope of the Rent-A-Scientist Schleswig-Holstein initiative in 2022.

During those 90 minutes, we discussed polar science or career paths to science but also had some hands-on practical work by looking at phytoplankton cultures under the light-microscope.

I am happy to engage with students anytime! Please feel free to contact me and I will arrange a time to come by your school.

Undergraduate Students (BSc +)

I am experienced teaching undergraduates (Master level) with around 20 h of lectures ranging from statistics to ocean acidification.

Public Speaking

I have been an invited speaker at the Pfeffingen General Assembly (2018) and Pint of Science Basel (2019).

Science-based presentations for the general public can be requested at any time, please feel free to contact me.
